Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Company was organized in
1903 under the name of Wisconsin Tornado Mutual Insurance Company.
Initially located in Milton, Wisconsin, the company changed to its current
name and moved operations to Madison in 1946. After occupying an office on
1619 Monroe Street for 32 years, the company constructed and moved to the
current location in Old Sauk Trails Park, 8201 Excelsior Drive, in 1990.
Wisconsin Mutual was organized as a mutual company and continues to
operate as one, being fully owned by its policyholders.
The company writes business only in the state of Wisconsin,
utilizing over 1,000 agents in 200 agencies. Wisconsin Mutual insures
40,000 properties and 70,000 automobiles in the state with policies
written in every county. The company handles all but a few of its claims
out of the 6
adjuster offices located throughout the state and the Madison home
office. With more than 220 insurance companies writing private passenger
automobile coverage in Wisconsin, Wisconsin Mutual ranks in the top 10 in direct
written premiums. The company is also one of the top 10 writers in property
coverage in Homeowner premiums and in Farmowner premiums.
In addition to the Automobile, Homeowner and Farmowner packages,
the company also writes Fire and Extended Coverage, Commercial Packages,
Mobile Homeowner, Umbrella and Other Liability coverages, along with
Boats, Recreational Vehicles and other Personal Inland Marine items.
Wisconsin Mutual has experienced an extended period of
consistent growth recording increased direct premiums in 35 out of the
past 38 years. Profitability has also been exceptional as the company
has increased surplus in 23 of the last 27
years.
